Kevin Mattingly retirement

(L to R: IBEW Local 1 Business Manager Frank Jacobs, GKN Chief Steward Kevin Mattingly, Business Representative Ken Landwehr)

GKN Aerospace chief steward Brother Kevin Mattingly announced his retirement this week. Kevin started his IBEW career with McDonnell-Douglas on March 3, 1980 during a boon time when the former aerospace giant supported our community with 48,000 well-paying jobs. Appointed chief steward by late IBEW Local 1 Business Manager Donald Bresnan, Kevin and Business Representative Jerry Campbell represented 452 electricians at the plant and negotiated several lucrative contracts for our members.

After Defense Secretary Dick Cheney cancelled the A-12 Avenger, McDonnell-Douglas immediately laid off 9,000 workers at their Saint Louis facility and would eventually sell their operation to Boeing in 1996. Employment would continue to diminish until leveling at a low of 15,000 today.

Navigating the volatile cycles of the defense industry, Kevin resigned his chief steward position in 1988 and moved into management in 1994 where he would oversee and manage our members to maintain the expansive power distribution system throughout the McDonnell Douglas campus. Kevin maintained his call back rights and after 5 years in management would return to the bargaining unit for GKN Aerospace after their acquisition of Boeings machining division in 2000.

An articulate gentlemen with extensive experience in both union and management roles, Kevin would be called upon by Business Manager Gregory Booth and Business Representative Ken Landwehr to accept the chief steward position at GKN in 2011. He graciously accepted and helped negotiate GKN’s most recent contract.

Kevin officially retires on June 30, 2014 after a 34 year career with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local One. The entire staff offers our sincerest thanks to Kevin for his dedication and professionalism throughout his career! Enjoy retirement brother.
